Fiddle (Four Divisions), Banjo, Mandolin and Guitar Divisions $3000 in prize money and the

PA STATE FIDDLE TITLE.  This is a registered contest with the National Old Time Fiddlers Association.

Pennsylvania State Fiddle Contest Rules

 1. Contestants must register before the contest. 2. All contestants will draw for their order of appearance. The number one fiddler in the junior division will be permitted to replay. The replay will be after the last junior contestant. The best of both scores will be counted as the final score. 3. Contestants may play alone or with one accompanist. 4. Any fiddler that breaks a sp-ing during the competition will have the option to stop playing, if the tune is not completed, and make the repair. They may return to the competition and complete the tune or tunes as needed. If the tune is completed tlien the fiddler will only play any remaining tunes. 5. Contestants must play a hoedown first followed by the waltz and end with the tune of choice. The tune of choice should be a tune other than a hoedown or waltz. The three tunes must be played within five minutes or ten points will be deducted from the total score for each 30 seconds that continue over the five minute time limit. 6. All tunes should be played in an old time fiddle style at a danceable tempo. Show tunes such as; Listen To The Mockingbird, Black Mountain Rag and the Orange Blossom Speci’l1 will not be permitted as competition tunes. 7. Contact microphones and amplified instruments will not be permitted. 8. Trick or fancy fiddling is not allowed during the contest. Instruments are not to be cross-tuned for the competition. 9. Judging will score fiddlers in the areas of; intonation, rhythmic accuracy, tone quality and creativity. The decision of the judges is final. Score sheets will be available to the fiddlers after the competition. 10. No sheet music or music stands shall be displayed in the contesting area. 11. Any contestant winning three consecutive years in the P A State Championship division must sit out the next year or return to judge. Any teen or senior division champion winning three consecutive years will move up to the championship division the following year. A junior champion winning three consecutive times will move up to the teen division. Local contests will follow this rule if the fiddler has won 3 times in their division the year before. Local contest championship winners do not need to sit out for a year from the local contests if they are a state champion. 12. Fiddlers must play in the order of the drawing. Audience applause will not influence the judge’s score. The contest is a blind judging event so fiddlers should not be near the judging area at any time. 13. Contestants must appear on stage to accept their trophy and or prize money. 14. Fiddlers are not permitted to speak near the microphone.

All fiddle contests will have four age divisions; Junior  Division ages 12 years and under, Teen Division ages 13-19 years, Senior Division ages 50 years and over and the Championship Division ages 20-49 years.  Fiddle contestants must enter their actual age division at the State Fiddle Contest.  Local fiddle contests do allow contestants to move up to the next age division if they have won three times in their age division.  The guitar, banjo and mandolin division at the State Fiddle contest will be one age division per instrument and is open to all styles with two songs per contestant.
